Welcome to the PFMC-21

The performance of fusion devices and of future fusion power plants strongly depends on the capability and durability of plasma-facing materials and components under the expected operational conditions. This comprises the resistance to heat and particle loads, material and in particular thermo-mechanical properties, as well as the variation of those as a result of fusion neutron irradiation. These are all critical parameters, which need to be understood and tailored from atomistic to component levels. The 21st International Conference on Plasma-Facing Materials and Components for Fusion Applications addresses these issues.

Topics

  • Tungsten, tungsten alloys, and advanced steels
  • Low-Z and liquid materials
  • Erosion, re-deposition, mixing, and dust formation
  • Fuel retention and removal
  • Materials under extreme thermal and particle loads
  • Technology and qualification of plasma-facing components
  • Neutron effects in plasma-facing materials
  • Fusion devices and edge plasma physics
  • Boronisation and wall conditioning techniques

Venue

The Conference will take place from 10 to 14 May 2027 at the Clayton Hotel in Düsseldorf, offering participants a central and well-connected venue in one of Germany’s vibrant conference cities. The hotel will serve as a meeting point for the scientific sessions, networking opportunities, and the accompanying programme throughout the event week.

Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, is a dynamic city on the River Rhine known for its international atmosphere, modern architecture, and rich cultural scene. The city combines excellent transport connections with a lively old town, museums, and a wide range of restaurants and cafés. Its compact city centre and welcoming environment make Düsseldorf an attractive destination for conference participants and visitors alike. The Clayton Hotel is located close to Düsseldorf’s Japanese Quarter, one of the largest Japanese communities in Europe and a distinctive part of the city’s international character.
